1912-1914

From 1912 to the outbreak of war on 4th August 1914 the number of Territorial Regiments encamped at Porthcawl during the summer months increased. Such activity throughout the UK suggests that the clouds of war were forming if not yet a certainty.

1912


  • 3rd Gloucester Battalion Special Reserve     April 23rd-1st June (East of Newton Church.)

  • Glamorgan Royal Horse Artillery   25th May-8th June (Nottage Fields)   
  The Glamorgan R.H.A had its H.Q in Port Talbot and were the only Royal Horse Battery in Wales at that time.They were the first artillery to  camp at Porthcawl. They marched to camp on the 25th May arriving at 1o'clock. (270 men)
  • South Wales Mounted Brigade Field Ambulance - H.Q.Hereford.       (attached to above.)

  • Glamorgan Yeomanry local unit - July (Newton)


1913

  • Cardiganshire Royal Field Artillery - May (Newton)
  • The Welsh Border Infantry Brigade - July (Nottage) 
The Border Regimental Band was the first band to give a concert at the opening of the  Porthcawl Bandstand on the Green, 30th July 1913.

  • 3rd Battalion The Cheshire Regiment -  April-June
  • Glamorgan Yeomanry (local) -  May (Hopkins Field near Locks Lane.)
  • 3rd Battalion The Royal Welsh Fusiliers Special Reserve - July (Locks Common)

Within days of striking camp on the Friday morning the Regiment (600 officers and men) was ordered to proceed to Pembroke Dock to defend Milford Haven.


From August 4th 1914 the situation changed.
