Porthcawl 1913
September-December

               THE PORTHCAWL NEWS                                  September 1913
  • Councillor Grace said that a new bye law should be imposed in Porthcawl, to make it an offence to throw paper in the streets.
  • The South Wales Daily News estimates that, this season,175,000 visitors have put up for short or long periods at Porthcawl.
  • The Chairman of the Council drew attention to the state of affairs regarding the telephone arrangements and the local police station. He felt that subscribers should have direct communication with the station.
  • Beware of pickpocketing at Rest Bay!
  •  Dr Forsdike of “Plastirion”,Esplanade has complained of the noise disturbance on the Esplanade this August. What with Studt’s organ ,Territorial singing, a crazy old motor bus, and the constant horn blowing of passing motors life had been a burden.
  •  The roadway between the Marine Hotel and the Pier Hotel is to be made up this winter. Certain premises are ,also,to undergo alterations.
  •  Esplanade Avenue has been tarred and gravelled once more and we feel proud of the street. · Due to the popularity of the Rest Home an extension scheme is to be implemented. This would, also, entail the purchase of the Dunraven Hotel , Southerndown, primarily for the housing of women and children. ·
  • Congratulations to the new “Seaweeds”. For the benefit of the uninitiated, it may be stated that this is the name of the new football club formed this month.

           THE PORTHCAWL NEWS                                      October 1913
  • There will be a general meeting of the Porthcawl R.F.C Thursday 8th October. The business to be transacted is of an important character.
  •  A  new road is to be constructed between the Globe Inn and Moorlands School across the field.
  • Porthcawl Dock has been proposed as a possible site for a ship-breaking yard. · Bob Ching took 27 days to walk from Land’s End to John o’Groats. Not bad for a man of 65yrs who was wounded in the Boer War.
  •  The Council urge the G.W.R Company to seriously consider the advisibility of placing Porthcawl on the mainline at an early date.
  • During the last fortnight 80 manholes have been cleaned out and the main sewers inspected daily.
  •  Newton suffered badly last week during the heavy rains. One resident complained his furniture was damaged. He claimed compensation.
  •  The nuisance of allowing animals to stray about the streets during the night continues unabated. One resident described his street as a farmyard-”what with geese, and cows, and horses and things.”
  •  November 5th– we hear that penny bombs this year will have twice the noise for the same price.
  •  Sadly there are a number of rheumaticky dogs to be seen in Porthcawl.
